Arashiyama Bamboo Grove in Kyoto:
Best Time to Visit & How to Avoid the Crowds

The Iconic Arashiyama Bamboo Forest: A Must-See in Kyoto

Arashiyama Bamboo Grove bamboo forest in Kyoto

The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, often called the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, is one of Kyoto’s most famous tourist attractions. It is almost always bustling with visitors from around the world.
If you want to experience the tranquil, ethereal atmosphere you see in photos, the best time to visit is early morning. From sunrise until around 7:00 AM (Japan Standard Time, UTC+9), you can enjoy a peaceful stroll through the towering bamboo with very few people around.

Essential Information

Location: Sagatogetsukocho, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, Japan
Opening Hours: Open 24 hours a day
Admission: Free

Is it free? Can you visit at night?

Since the Bamboo Grove is located on a public path, there is no entrance fee, and it is accessible 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Although you can walk through at night, there is very little street lighting, so it can become quite dark after sunset. For the best sightseeing experience and safety, it is recommended to visit during the early morning or daytime.

Can you take photos in the Bamboo Grove?

Yes, photography is permitted as it is a public space.
(Please be mindful of other visitors, avoid blocking the path, and avoid lingering in one spot for too long.) However, due to the high volume of tourists, capturing a calm shot like those seen in travel brochures can be quite challenging during peak hours.

Peak Hours & Crowds

Crowds usually begin to gather between 7:00 and 9:00 AM. Between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM, the path becomes very crowded.
Expect even larger crowds during Japanese school trip seasons and peak holiday periods.

Experience the Magic: Early Morning is Best!

Arashiyama Bamboo Grove bamboo forest in Kyoto I have visited the Bamboo Grove in both spring and autumn.
Even before dawn, I found a handful of photographers already gathered with their tripods, eagerly waiting for the first light of day.
As soon as the sun rises and they capture their shots, they usually leave soon after. While the timing may vary slightly in summer when the sun rises earlier, tourists begin arriving in waves about an hour after sunrise during the cherry blossom and autumn leaf seasons. Whether you want a tranquil walk or the perfect commemorative photo, arriving just after sunrise is the best option.

How to Get There (Access)

JR Sagano Line (San-in Main Line): 15-minute walk west from Saga-Arashiyama Station.
Keifuku Railway (Randen Line): 10-minute walk west from Arashiyama Station.
Hankyu Arashiyama Line: 20-minute walk northwest from Arashiyama Station.

Where to Stay: Recommended Areas

Togetsukyo Bridge, Arashiyama

To beat the crowds, staying at a hotel or "Ryokan" (traditional inn) within the Arashiyama area is by far the best choice.
Staying nearby allows you easy access not only to the Bamboo Grove but also to Togetsukyo Bridge and Tenryu-ji Temple, letting you fully immerse yourself in the quiet, historic charm of the area before the day-trippers arrive. Additionally, while slightly further away, the area offers easy access to Daikaku-ji Temple, Hozugawa River Boat Rides, and the Sagano Romantic Train.
